Summer is well and truly upon us, as is the age-old dilemma that comes with the warm weather: how do you dress to impress while staying cool and looking work-appropriate? Nobody appreciates someone showing up to work in a boob tube or hot pants, but we shouldn't be expected to suffer in starchy-shirt silence.
Back to Basics - What Works
A white shirt always works. This is a fact that is easy to commit to memory. White is a light colour, meaning that it won't absorb heat and light at the same level as blue or black, for example. Choose a super-lightweight material such as linen and the world is your oyster. If white isn't your style or you fancy a change, consider grey, taupe, pastel colours, or anything light and airy. For a more formal look, it can work to add a lightweight blazer - think soft fabric, nothing heavy or shoulder-padded - or a dainty cardigan.
What Doesn't Work
Your weekend outfits are just that - for the weekend. Hot weather may tempt people to throw off all their smart clothes and wear the only thing that brings them relief when the mercury soars, but there is a level of professionalism you need to adhere to. It also depends on what kind of office you work in. Harem pants or culottes, or even jumpsuits, can be acceptable in certain workplaces, but be sure to check your office dress code to see what is acceptable to wear. You can pair these loose bottom-half items with pumps or deck shoes and that trusty light-coloured blouse or shirt. If this casual combo isn't possible, just focus on the materials. Avoid thick cotton and opt for linen instead.
Dressing for summer in the office is certainly difficult sometimes; however, the right combination of materials and colours will have you looking and feeling comfortable throughout the hot weather.
